As part of the academic curriculum, the B.Com (Regular) students of our college visited Sula Vineyards, Ramnagara, Karnataka, to gain first-hand knowledge of the functioning of a successful agro-based business. The visit was aimed at understanding the various aspects of the wine industry, including production, marketing, finance, and supply chain management.
The visit was conducted with the objective
• To understand the wine production process from grape cultivation to bottling.
• To explore the supply chain, logistics, and inventory management in the wine industry.
• To learn about marketing strategies and brand positioning in a niche market.
• To gain insights into financial planning, investment, and regulatory aspects of the wine business.
Tour of the Vineyard
• Students learned about grape cultivation, vineyard maintenance, and the importance of soil quality and climate.
• Exposure to different grape varieties grown in Ramnagara, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Sauvignon Blanc.
• Insights into organic farming practices and environmental sustainability
Wine Production Process
• Understanding the step-by-step process: harvesting, crushing, fermentation, aging, bottling, and labeling.
• Importance of quality control and hygiene standards in the production process.
• Introduction to modern machinery and automation in winemaking.
Marketing and Branding Strategies
• Brand building strategies used by Sula Vineyards to dominate the Indian wine market.
• Use of digital marketing, social media, and offline promotions to reach consumers.
• The significance of wine tourism in creating customer engagement, particularly in the Ramnagara region.
Financial and Supply Chain Management
• Overview of capital investment and financial management in the wine industry.
• Challenges in procurement, inventory control, and distribution channels.
• Understanding export procedures, government regulations, and taxation policies.
The industrial visit to Sula Vineyards, Ramnagara was an enriching experience for B.Com students of St. Francis College. It provided practical exposure to various aspects of business management, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application. Students gained a deeper understanding of the wine industry’s operational, marketing, and financial aspects, making this visit a valuable learning experience.
