The Critical Choice – “One Parachute, Endless Arguments"

The Critical Choice – One Parachute, Endless Arguments was an impactful experiential learning activity conducted as part of the BBA Aviation program, aimed at developing critical decision-making and ethical reasoning skills among students. The session simulated a high-risk aviation emergency scenario in which an aircraft was facing imminent failure, with only one parachute available for survival. Students were assigned diverse roles such as pilot, air traffic controller, medical professional, and high-profile passenger, and were required to justify why they should be chosen to survive.

The exercise sparked intense debates, compelling students to employ logical reasoning, emotional intelligence, and persuasive communication. Participants confronted complex ethical dilemmas, balancing personal survival against professional responsibility and societal value. The scenario challenged students to think beyond technical knowledge and consider the human and moral dimensions of aviation decision-making.

A core objective of the activity was to enhance crisis management capabilities, ethical judgment, leadership qualities, and teamwork—key competencies for aviation professionals. Through guided reflection and structured group discussions, students examined the psychological pressure involved in emergency situations, the difficulty of reaching consensus, and the importance of collaboration under stress.

The activity also fostered empathy, as students were encouraged to appreciate differing perspectives and value systems. It highlighted how individual beliefs, emotions, and professional roles influence decision-making in life-critical situations.
Overall, the session proved to be an eye-opening and enriching experience. It reinforced the significance of clear thinking, ethical reasoning, emotional awareness, and collective problem-solving, emphasizing that aviation is not only a technical field but also one deeply rooted in human values and responsible leadership.
